Open-World & Mission Design - The Saboteur

“The freeplay missions, areas of interest seeded all over the map, will keep you busy. They’re the highlight of the game, since they allow you to tackle them any way you see fit. Climb sniper towers to take out guards or destroy them at the base. Throw on a disguise and innocently toss grenades into a fueling station. Call on friends and watch le zut fly. There are hundreds of these spots placed around the map. Some of the best parts of the game come from taking on a tight cluster of sniper towers, tanks, and guarded cannons, which can become hairy once the alarm goes off and more troops enter the picture -- something the core missions completely forgot about.” -Rob Manuel, G4TV

“Like a lot of other open-world games, there's plenty of fun to be had through random acts of violence. Paris is filled with Nazi encampments like sniper nests and fuel depots that beg to be bombed. Every target is catalogued, giving players a huge check list of things to blow-up. Not only is this one of the most successful aspects of The Saboteur, but it also plays into the creative visual presentation.” -David Clayman, IGN USA

“As addictive as the perk goals are, it's the bread-and-butter sabotage that proves to be the real distraction. The world of The Saboteur is divided up into several interconnected areas - Paris takes up most of the map, but you also get quite a bit of surrounding countryside, and even a slither of Germany. In each of these regions there are literally hundreds of Nazi structures and emplacements - from watchtowers to searchlights to propaganda-spewing speakers. All of these assets can be destroyed with a well-placed stick of dynamite, and every time you destroy one you'll earn contraband – currency” -Neon Kelly, Videogamer.com

"The most satisfying side mission is the destruction of freeplay targets across the city … It's satisfying planting a stick of dynamite and running like hell away from the impending explosion."

"If the missions aren't enough to slake your thirst for destruction, Nazi-occupied Paris is just littered with opportunities to blow up Nazi stuff like propaganda-spouting speakers and search towers." -Justin McElroy, Joystiq
